Arrival in America

Most immigrants to America arrived by ship.  Since many immigrants were fleeing poverty in their homeland, they traveled in the steerage compartment of ships, crowded and uncomfortable.  If they came to America by way of the east coast, they passed the Statue of Liberty, a global symbol of the new freedoms the immigrants would enjoy.
